MODIG delivered the first RigiMill Moving Table to ASCO Industries, and we have talked to Bram Smets, CAM department and Key Equipment Manager at Asco Industries, about the MODIG solutions.
THE CHOICE OF MODIG
Asco Industries was looking for a precise finishing machine for titanium airplane parts. The key characteristics were a robust and precise machine to ensure a good and stable quality output. From that viewpoint, MODIG provided a solution with the moving table gantry machine type. This concept was in line with the rigidity requirements and in addition MODIG ensured the machine would be capable of reaching the required precision, which it does.
BENEFITS WITH THE MODIG
Asco Industries procured one of the first moving table gantry machines manufactured by MODIG. The design and development of this new concept brought some challenges to the project, but MODIG took this opportunity with full commitment. The flexibility, competence, and persistence of MODIG and its Belgian local partner Gima Machines were key in the machine deployment.
The machine has proven to meet the required precision and is a good solution for the required capabilities, and we recently achieved 100% uptime with an average of 98%.
MODIG had the machine fully installed in their Kalmar facility on a foundation. This made it possible to have a MODIG-Gima-Asco team testing, fine tuning the machine fully before shipping it out to Belgium. Not all machine builders do this for this size of machine, and this was an important strength seen by Asco Industries. Another positive point is the dedicated effort that MODIG puts into the design and visual aspect of the machine.
ABOUT ASCO INDUSTRIES
Asco Industries engages in the development, manufacture, treatment, and assembly of aluminum, steel, and titanium high precision components for the aerospace industry. The company offers flap actuation devices, slat actuation systems, engine & wing attachments, and landing gear components. The company was founded in 1954 and is headquartered in Zaventem; Asco operates from four locations, Belgium, Canada, US, and Germany with over 1,500 employees and a turnover exceeding 450 million US-dollar. Asco produces over 3000 assemblies every month and has the ambition to be a world leader in design and manufacture of high lift devices, complex mechanical assemblies, and major functional components for the aerospace industry.
ABOUT MODIG RIGIMILL MT
MODIG develops and manufactures all the machines. The RigiMill Moving Table (MT) is the fixed-gantry plus moving table design, with identical bridge structure as the RigiMill Moving Gantry (MG) and for vertical machining. RigiMill MT provides the highest quality in precision and rigidity, with chip removal rates up to 55 cubic inches/min (0.9 liter) in titanium and 1,000 cubic inches/min (16.4 liters) in aluminum.
